On 1 October 2008, a low emission zone (Umweltzone) was established in Frankfurt am Main, the aim of which is to reduce fine particle emissions and thus ensure long-term compliance with the limits laid down in the Federal Emissions Protection Law.
The low emission zone covers the area enclosed by the ‘orbital motorway’. To the west it is bordered by the A5, to the south by the A3 and to the east and north by the A661.
Across Germany, four pollutant groups have been designated for vehicles. Vehicles belonging to Pollutant Group 1 receive no badge and may not enter the low emission zone. Depending on the level of pollutant emission, vehicles from Pollutant Groups 2 to 4 are issued with a red, yellow or green badge. From 2010, vehicles will only be permitted with a yellow or green badge, while from 2012, only those with a green badge will be allowed to enter the low emission zone.
